Everything you need to know to visit the Óc Eo archaeological site

Getting There

From Long Xuyên

Distance: ~30 km (about 45 minutes)

Take QL91 south toward Thoại Sơn district. Turn left at the sign for Óc Eo-Ba The. The road is paved and well-marked. Motorbike or car rental available in Long Xuyên.

From Rach Gia

Distance: ~50 km (about 1 hour)

Take QL80 east toward Thoại Sơn. Follow signs to Óc Eo town. This route passes through scenic rice paddies typical of the Mekong Delta.

From Cần Thơ

Distance: ~90 km (about 2 hours)

Take QL91 west through Long Xuyên, then continue to Thoại Sơn. Cần Thơ has the nearest airport with domestic flights from Hanoi and Hồ Chí Minh City.

From Hồ Chí Minh City

Distance: ~240 km (about 5 hours)

Take the Trung Luong-My Thuan-Cần Thơ Expressway, then continue west to Long Xuyên. Best as an overnight trip combined with other Mekong Delta destinations.

The museum is located at the foot of Ba The mountain, next to the main archaeological excavation areas.

Note

Many major artifacts (K5 inscription, Vishnu statue, Roman medallions) are housed at the Museum of Vietnamese History in Hồ Chí Minh City. Consider visiting both locations for a complete picture.

Cool, dry season with comfortable temperatures (25-30°C). Ideal for outdoor exploration of archaeological sites.

Good

March - May

Hot and humid (30-35°C). Visit early morning or late afternoon. Bring sun protection and water.

Challenging

June - November

Rainy season with frequent afternoon showers. Some sites may be flooded. Fewer tourists but less comfortable conditions.

Ba The Mountain

Distance: Adjacent to Óc Eo

Sacred mountain with temples and panoramic views of the Mekong Delta. The mountain was central to Funan religious practice. Pagodas and shrines dot the slopes.

Long Xuyên

Distance: 30 km

Capital of An Giang Province. Visit the An Giang Museum (houses 6 National Treasures), floating market, and Ton Duc Thang Museum.

Tra Su Cajuput Forest

Distance: 40 km

Beautiful wetland nature reserve with boat tours through flooded forest. Best visited during the wet season (August-November) when water levels are high.

Sam Mountain (Nui Sam)

Distance: 60 km

Important pilgrimage site with temples, pagodas, and the famous Ba Chua Xu temple. Excellent views of the Cambodia border region.

Day 1: Arrive in Long Xuyên, visit An Giang Museum

Day 2: Óc Eo Culture Museum and archaeological site, Ba The Mountain

Day 3: Tra Su Forest or Sam Mountain, return to Cần Thơ/HCMC

Houses the most important Óc Eo artifacts: K5 inscription, Vishnu statue, Roman medallions. Essential for understanding Funan civilization. Open 8:00-11:30, 13:30-17:00, closed Monday.

An Giang Province Museum

Long Xuyên City, An Giang Province

Houses six National Treasures from Óc Eo including the Brahma statue and Linga-Yoni sets. Good introduction before visiting the archaeological site.

Cần Thơ Museum

1 Hoa Binh, Ninh Kieu, Cần Thơ

Four National Treasures from Nhon Thanh site including wooden Buddha and unique Linga-Yoni. Convenient if flying through Cần Thơ airport.
