Dinh Quan - b. 1964, Hai Phong, Vietnam
Dinh Quan graduated in 1990 from Hanoi University of Fine Arts, specialising in lacquer ware.
Dinh Quan's lacquer technique is almost perfect, and has won him prizes at the Vietnam Fine Arts Association and the National Fine Arts Exhibition.
His most important contribution is his innovations in term of texture, movement and substances. He is the first lacquer painter to create truly dynamic paintings, where the actions of the subject matter, often female bodies, tend to move towards abstraction. The figures in his paintings float with a sense of melancholy, of nostalgia, but the colours, particularly the reds and blacks, glow with an inner warmth.
